The
flight of locks at Caen Hill in Devises on the Kennet & Avon Canal is one
of the most impressive flights on the whole system, falling down a steep hill
in a straight line of 21 massive locks. The pounds between each lock are
so short that it was necessary to create huge side-pounds to give a greater
reservoir of water and prevent too great a rise and fall of water when each
locks was filled and emptied. These huge side-pounds accompany each lock, and
are all the same size, but unfortunately cannot be seen in this picture.
