A Bit about Naomi
Naomi is also an expatriate Londoner, since her father moved to
Scotland working for Big Blue in Greenock. After school she worked with animals
at various kennels, a safari park and elsewhere, before marrying Dave Bedwin
and moving to the Halewood area of Liverpool.
After her split with Dave she moved in with me and although she worked for a time as a care assistant for the elderly and also with mentally handicapped adults, she has been herself disabled by asthma which she's had since childhood. One of our greatest adventures on my family's narrowboat Rambling Rose involved a day-trip we arranged on her for several members of the day centre for mentally-handicapped adults she was working at, Whittle Pike in Ramsbottom. We took them up the Wigan Flight in the narrowboat, but halfway up Naomi's father decided to try to sink the boat. The members from the day-care centre were only slightly upset, but the other staff from the centre panicked in a big way!
My family have owned Rambling Rose, a
50' narrowboat since the early 1970's and as a result of spending a lot of time
around the UK canal system, Naomi's become a very proficient
narrowboat artist. She displays and sells her work
at craft fairs and canal festivals around the country from time to time,
although her asthma interferes even with that now, because of an allergy to
solvents! Her style is a very classical canal art style, though she introduces
her own elements and style in many instances. Her work now adorns many boats
and houses round the country and she used to accept commissions from time to
time, health permitting. Unfortunately, her asthma is now bad enough that she's
had to stop doing this altogether, but she's a very crafty person, all
in all.
Although we met & courted in a Fidonet echo, Naomi initially played games on her computer more than anything else, but she now spendsmost of her time on the Internet these days, and even the delights of strategy games, computer graphics, and digital photography can't compete with MSN, The Deck (hi all!) and online card games. In her day, however, she had a genuine effect on both the echo and the English language. It was Naomi who introduced Electronic Cuddles, and even invented the Sloder, the technique of which can be dangerous to the neophyte so I shall not repeat it here, but suffice it to say that the term arose out of a discussion about soldering irons and involves being nearly suffocated by her somewhat ample bosom! <big grin>.
Her other interests include Scotland, "adverse weather conditions" Roger <spit> Whitacker, getting (and giving) cuddles and mooning when she's playing hearts! We have no kids as yet, but hope springs eternal... Instead we have an ever-increasing menagerie of pets, currently running at a standard poodle, a Border Collie, 2 parrots, and a pond of koi carp in our back garden! Negotiations are currently underway regarding a third parrot... <groan>
Naomi more recent interests involve competitive obedience with the dogs, particularly Zoe, the poodle. She won loads of rosettes, but is currently resting on her laurels to give her asthma a chance to abate.
