The Upper Peak Forest Canal is a wonderful cul-de-sac. It starts,
for me, at the massive aquaduct over the River Goyt below the town of Marple
and rises from the Lower Peak Forest Canal up through one of the most beautiful
flights of locks, with woods on both sides until near the top where you enter
the town of Marple, although the town is never intrusive. From Marple the canal
winds sleepily up the Goyt Valley to Whaley Bridge, clinging to the side of the
valley until it reaches the terminus at Whaley Bridge. Because it is not a
through-route, it is quieter than many canals.
